In 1993, as the Philippines prepared to join the World Trade Organization, the Department of Agriculture began discussions on meat importation which soon led to the establishment of the Meat Importers and Traders Association (MITA).
MITA, now with 80 members, advocates for liberalization and rationalization of meat importation and supplies products to various segments of society. Members have also invested in meat-cutting plants, cold storage facilities, and refrigerated transportation. The association also collaborates with government bureaus, local producers, and is sought out by foreign entities for its expertise.
